Explorations :: In Masks :: An Update

April 14 2020,

Buenos Dias todos. Today is a good day, I can feel it. I'm sitting here listening to Andrea Bocelli Mixes on youtube. Did you know that Andrea Bocelli has a son, Matteo Bocelli that can sing? If only I was a few decades younger.

I have stopped trying to finish my quilt when Vermont Quilt Festival said that they were cancelling their show that was to happen in June. Since the cancellation, I have focused my energy on making masks.

Below is the first reiteration of the mask. This mask has three pleats. At the time, I did not have elastic so I made ties. For me, the pleats were difficult, even though most people were doing this pattern.

This is the second reiteration. This came from a youtube video that I stumbled upon on my first day of investigation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2B7Twkh2SI It is a pattern from Sewing with Sara. This one I made it with a filter pocket and ties.

This is the third reiteration. This was also from the same pattern from Sewing with Sara, but without a filter pocket and with elastic bands. I was able to get 10 yards of elastic from a local quilt shop. It didn't go as well. Hubby said it hurt too much.

Here is Paula the Koala, that's really her name, showing off the final result of the first finish of the masks. What that means is, after I made a bunch of these and gave them away, I perfected them further.

The first picture of Paula the Koala, is a fabric called, Mi Familia by Jesus Cruz by Andover Fabric created in 2013. I don't have a lot of that, it was an impulse by from way long ago. If anyone wants to buy me a present, there is some on ebay. Just Kidding.

Paula the Koala, below is wearing a fabric by Cranston Cotton Salamander Chamelion Gecko Lizard Iguana. I didn't fuzzy cut it properly, so you can't see the freakin' animals. This I bought in 2008.

Here is the pattern. The top one is the outside, and the bottom is the lining.

The first finished batch, I made the ties by hand, without a bias tape maker. I mentioned it to one of my girlfriend, and she went on a hunt looking for a bias tape maker locally. She was able to find one, and purchased and delivered it to the house. We had a hard time figuring out what size to use. Single fold, double fold... ugh, it hurt my head too much. She couldn't figure it out. The explanation on the websites didn't make sense, and finally I found one with an actual picture. So the final result was I needed the Bias Tape Maker 25mm, which makes a 1" single fold or a 1/2" double fold strip. Note that I am not cutting it on the bias, I am cutting it on the width of the fabric. So it's 2" x 40" or 42" (depending on the width of the fabric).

I also figured out that if I notch the inside of the strip, when I fold it in at the ends, I have less bulk and it makes it easier to sew through.

Below is the strip that is attached to face mask.

A week ago, I read a blog post by Kathleen Loomis, Art With A Needle, and adapted a few of her ideas onto "my version".

She writes that she puts interfacing into the mask. After researching more about interfacing, I learned that it is a good extra layer, and still making it breathable. The key was to make sure that it was non-woven. As I was researching, I stumbled upon a youtube channel called "The Fabric Patch". It talks about interfacing and the different type of masks to make. It was very informative.

From Kathleen Loomis' rendition, she says to turn the top ties 45 degrees, and the bottom ties 90 degrees. I asked hubby to try it, and he said it was much better.

I zig zagged this portion. I gave a finished one to my friend who was also making masks and told her to make this version and she did. She said she was not going to turn the ties. A few days later, her husband said the ones that were angled were better. Now she is doing it this way. She was also doing the pleat version and since then, have changed to making this version.

I think I have the final version of a mask that I am very happy with and that I will be mass producing, I meant making. I can only make 10 a day, so it's mass producing. There's only one me, and many stuffed animals who want to model.

Below Paula the Koala is modeling off more masks.

This one is all black, at a request of a friend, who's husband needed it for his uniform. I think Paula the Koala liked it, because she felt like she was a Ninja.

Here's Paula the Koala peeking.

Besides sewing masks, I have been cooking. I go out once a week, usually when it is raining, either on Sunday or Monday to the grocery. My thinking is, if it is raining, less people will be inclined to go out. I did go yesterday morning, just before the monsoon. I have been cooking a lot. I cook three big meals over the week, and then eat leftovers when I really don't feel like cooking.

Below is Beef and Broccoli from The Woks of Life. I think I use skirt steak for the recipe below, but I have used flank steak before. Their recipes are to die for. I have tried a bunch of their recipes, and it has never failed. Some are recipes that I grew up with, so it hits home and is a home run.

This, my friends, is another to die for. So my friend and I went to Bon Chon in Salem, MA for lunch a few months ago, before the whole lock down. On the menu was fried chicken. Bon Chon is well known for their fried chicken. For years I have heard about it, but never had the opportunity to try it.

OMG, to die for. I dream about it.

On television the other day, they were saying that there was a surplus of chicken wings because there is no basketball, I'm assuming it is March Madness .

Back to chicken wings. So I put chicken wings on my list of things to purchase. Got to BJs, and bought BJs size chicken wings. It was messy, with the frying, but worth everything. I also bought BJs size canola oil, to make sure I don't run out of oil. Below is the result, it won't disappoint. The recipe is from Foodiepinoy.com, and I didn't change a thing, except I didn't strain the garlic and ginger from the sauce. For the next 3 days for lunch, we will be having chicken wings. Hubby doesn't like messy food, but he ate this one!

Our dishwasher is also running on overdrive. Usually we run it once a week, but now it's once every five days. Again, plenty of dish washing tablets.

Okie, so below is a preview of the quilt that I am trying to finish. The new deadline is end of July, plenty of time, plenty of time. It is going to be a king size, and I can make it as big as I want, because there is no restrictions now since Vermont Quilt Festival is kapot temporarily.

My pajamas and sweat pants are overused, and the jeans and "go-out-clothes" are currently going on time-out, I meant hiatus. When I do curb side pickup, I'm in my hello kitty or seven up Old Navy pajama pants.

I still have a days where I absolutely do nothing. Tears still flow. Fear has taken over. One day last week I said to myself, "Will we see the other side? Will we ever come out of this? What if we don't?" I can't even talk to people without crying. It is so hard. Keeping busy is hard, there is only so much busy one can do. So doing nothing is a good thing.

So thank you for reading, be safe, be well.

Rejected!

December 12 2014,

I got an email yesterday from QuiltCon saying something along the lines that my two quilts I submitted were REJECTED. No really, I'm not at all annoyed or pissed or upset. I wasted spent $60.00 to enter the quilt ($25.00 for membership + $35.00 for quilt entry). Carry on, carry on.

Another rejection came from hubby. We had been working on tiling the fireplace. Measuring, scoring and cutting the tiles. Ever since this fireplace project started, hubby kept on saying something along the lines of, "When are you going to do the fireplace?" This question and / or sometimes statement has been going on for months.

I was hesitant to take on this project so I kept on saying that I wasn't going to do it. And usually what happens is that we'll tackle it together.

Yesterday I knew we were going to tile it. So I asked him, "When are you going to do the fireplace?" He blew up. I then said, "It was a joke. You keep on asking me when I'M going to do the fireplace this whole time, and now when I ask you the same question, YOU can't take it?" So that was that.

He did the fireplace with none of my help. Now every time I look at this freakin' fireplace, it will give me a sewer sour taste. Whatever. For right now, we're not on talking terms.

We'll see how the grouting goes today.

Just Suck It Up

March 7 2011,

"I wish you had told me that I have to put a four digit pin on my phone when I set up the company's email?" the man irritatedly said on the phone.

Rewind back to yesterday evening.

One of our client, their employee wanted to get their work email on their phone. So he called and I helped him set up the phone with the exchange server.

We ran into problems, so I had him call his cell phone provider and gave him the necessary server information.

This morning, an email came through that wrote, "But then there was another glitch, I think connected to the [company] security system."

Turns out that he did not want to have to put a four digit pin every time he accesses his phone. He said that he had to format his phone and start all over to get the four digit pin off.

I held the phone as he bitched and I just apologized to him half ass-ly. As soon as he was done, I said "Thank you, goodbye."

What an ass - he should have read over the company's "Written Information Security Program" instead of bitching at me. Oh well, lesson learned - he will be placed on my "annoying client" list. And when someone gets on that list - things just go downhill for them from this point forward.

Flooded

March 7, 2011

Crap. Crap. Crap.

Our basement got flooded. We did not notice it till 1:00 this afternoon. There was approximately 3 - 4 inches of water by the time we noticed it. Yes, we do have a sump pump, but we did not plug it in because it was at an awkward area, the contractor did not think about this issue when he designed the "cover" for it.

Hubby's pissed and thinks we need to replace the 15 x 20 rug under the pool table and the padding.

So for the past 4 hours, I've been wet vac-ing the carpet, putting fans around the area.

Luckily a friend called at 10:00 tonight and needed computer help. She asked how we were doing. I told her about our situation and she gave us a number of a guy who cleans basement after it floods. This guy is guaranteeing that there will not be any mold after he is done. We shall see.

Ironically, earlier in the day, hubby had said something along the lines that we weren't having as much rain as he had expected. A few hours later... ka bam.

C'est la vie,

A Whirlwind

May 21, 2009

Just got back from a business trip to Chicago.

The highlight of the trip was the taxi ride from downtown Chicago to O'hare airport.

There were three of us who were car-pooling to the airport. This taxi driver was nuts, but he was great. My flight was scheduled to leave at 5:00 PM, and I thought, oh plenty of time, until I saw the traffic.

Traffic did not scare this cab driver. Instead of waiting patiently in traffic, he would get off an exit, and jump right back on at the next exit. We did pass a bunch of cars. At one point, when he got off the exit, we went 3 miles on one of the side road parallel to the highway. When he merged back onto the highway, he pushed himself into the merge, not caring about driving etiquette at all. He even drove on the break down lane to pass cars.

At one point, I told the lady who was riding with me that I hope the cops don't catch us, because if would probably cost us 20 minutes.

Everytime the cab driver did his magic by cutting in and out of traffic, my tip for him went up.

We safely got to the airport in one hour and I gave him a good tip for his incredible driving skill.

It's Over!

March 5, 2009

So hubby went for surgery this afternoon. He talked the doctor out of a full anesthesia and just had local anesthesia.

After 35 minutes, the doctor was able to get the pin out (thank God!). So his foot is in the funny looking shoe, and Dr. Foot sent him home with crutches, antibiotics and mega pain-killers.

So for the next two weeks, I'm going to play nurse (I just need to get me a sexy nurse outfit).

More Craziness!

March 4, 2009

Update on needle in foot. We went to the podiatry today and the podiatry examined hubby's foot. "Dr. Foot" as we'll call him, yanked hubby's foot back and hubby flinched. Dr. Foot said, "If you can't handle that, I can't do anything."

Damn it, don't you remember, there's a needle in the foot?

Dr. Foot took x-rays and came back and said something along the line, "I can't do anything for you."

At this point, hubby was pissed. He grabbed his sock and shoe and started putting it on and wanted to leave.

Dr. Foot said, "Are you in a hurry to leave?"

Hubby said, "No, but you said you can't do anything!"

Dr. Foot said, "I meant to say, I can't do anything here, you have to go to the hospital where I can do the procedure there."

Hubby sat back down and listened.

Damn. First of all, why send hubby to this other place in the first place! He was right at the hospital where the procedure is to be done. Secondly, why wasn't hubby sent home with the x-rays from the ER? What waste! That's why our health insurance is so expensive, because of inefficiency!

So now we have to wait for a phone call from Dr. Foot's appointment assistance to schedule a surgery.

Dr. Foot told hubby to stay off his feet, and sent him home with a funny looking shoe to wear. That's another waste, because hubby ain't gonna wear that funny looking shoe, and as stubborn as hubby is, he is out playing pool!

Got a call this afternoon from this hospital. Hubby is scheduled for a 2:20 PM surgery. Full anesthetic and all just for a freaking pin on the bottom of his foot. Will give you updates tomorrow. If you see somebody in the hospital hand quilting, that'll be me. :)

Below is another baby quilt. Similar to my previous baby quilt. These squares are 2 inches not sewn, and 1.5 inches sewn. This is going to a couple in Oregon who recently popped out a baby boy. Finished size is approximately 38 inches x 38 inches.

(Above: Front of baby quilt)

Finally I finished up the fish fabric. Woo hoo! (I did put the label properly this time on the lower right hand side of the quilt).

Crazy!

March 3, 2009

It's 21 degrees outside and do you see something wrong with this picture?

The top is down! Hopefully the heater is working in this car.

Below is a comment from a "Cream Cheese Squares" recipe.

If you look at the recipe, no where do the ingredients say "vinegar", "thyme", or "bay leaves".
I'll be making these Cream Cheese Squares soon.

Hubby accidentally stepped on a dress pin last night. The pin broke, but his foot still hurts. We don't know for sure if the sharp end of the pin is still in his foot. Now he's huffing and puffing about it and won't go to the doctor, because of how much time it'll take and other obligations.

For now, I'll just keep apologizing and be quiet. After all, it is my fault that I was careless to have the pins in the carpet.

*March 3, 2009 5:00 PM* He finally went to the emergency room and doctor told him that he does have a 11 mm (1.1 cm) needle stuck inside the ball of his foot. The emergency doctor could not get it out, so now he needs surgery to get the needle out. What an expensive quilting project this will be. *
