Does a New Pool Cue Cause You To Play Better?

September 11, 2009

It's been over a month since I got my new Webb cue. And I love it. My game has improved, I'm not rattling or skidding the ball as much, and I can actually aim and make difficult balls.

I ponder upon the question, am I better because of the cue or is it just all mental. My old cue, a McDermott was heavier, and weighed 19.5 oz. Webb (the cue maker) said that it should be lighter, so it is now 18 something oz. My old cue felt balanced, and so is this one. As nuts as this may sound, I feel like I am one with the cue. With every stroke and every hit, it feels like an extension of my arm.

I have also gotten posession of Joe Tucker's "Stroke Trainer". I use this once in a while and do drills. I have a lot of problem hitting the center of the cue ball. And this tool has changed my stance to allow me to hit the center ball.

So the question is, does a new or better cue make you play better or do you play better because it is a new cue? (Did I phrase that question right?) Is it all just mental?

methinks it depends. (that's the answer to every question anyone can ever have.)

there are certain cues, i think, are made in such a way that it helps you play better. these cues tend to transmit everything to your hand, giving you maximum feedback. you can then take these info and figure out what went right/wrong. for me personally, a lot of cues out there kinda hit the same, so these cues offer more of a psychological effect than actual physical feedback. if your cue generates maximum feedback where you can feel every little bump and vibration, then i think it's a keeper. not that my opinion matters much (b/c i didn't pay for the stick). :-P

p00lriah,

I guess one knows when it's the perfect stick that you've got in your hands.

I'm in posession of two great sticks. But if Webb finds out that I'm not playing with his cue, I think he'll kick my butt all the way to Alaska. :)
