January 17 2011,
This conversation was overheard recently.
15 year old boy: Dad, I want to buy the "Decoded"book by Jay-Z
Dad: Buy the electronic version of it so that I can read it on my iPad
15 year old boy: No, I don't want to buy the electronic version, I want to go to B&N and buy it.
Hubby: Why don't you borrow it from the library?
15 year old boy: The library? Yeah from B&N.
Hubby: No, borrow it from the library.
15 year old boy: Ugh? (5 seconds of silence) Oh, the library. No, I want to keep the book.
It is sad that kids these days don't know what the library is. Going to the topic of books, we use the library a lot. Every three weeks, we would borrow 3 books for hubby to read. We don't have a collection of books except those from the college years. Why buy when you can borrow. You don't have to store or move the books, and yes, they can get heavy. So the next time you want to buy a book, think twice and borrow from your local library. Saves you some ca-ching to go eat something yummy.

absolutely hands-down agree. i enjoy novels, but most aren't worth buying since you won't read it again once the plot has been revealed. i recently read kid delicious' biography, and i would've had massive buyers regret had i purchased the book. fortunately i borrowed it from the library and i got to enjoy the book without spending the money.
the books i do buy are either the ones worth reading over and over, or reference type books like byrne's books with 300+ shots. it's almost impossible to learn all these shots in a few weeks, so it's a good idea to buy them. used, of course. :)
I agree that reference books are good to buy as long as you refer to them occassionally, or else it is just a waste. We are a wasteful society, one less thing to own is better.
