So August has not been my month. On August 12th, I missed a step and fell on my knee. It literally took my breath away. Hubby luckily was with me and after five minutes of sitting, he got me up and we started walking. I was able to walk but was in much pain. When we got home, hubby said to give it a few days and it should be fine. On Wednesday a few people called, and I told them what happened. They said, go to the doctor. I called the doctor's office on Wednesday and was able to get an appointment the same day, not with my primary care, but with another doctor in the office. Note, I never have been able to see my primary care, nor have she followed up.

I got an x-ray that afternoon and the resident said, if you don't hear from me, you're fine, and I'll call you tomorrow. If there is something wrong, then I'll call you later tonight. If you broke your patella, you'll be my first patella case.

The right knee swollen.
That evening, she called at 7:30 PM. She said that I broke my patella in two places. In the mean time, don't move the knee. She was going to figure out specialists and schedule an appointment for me. She was able to get me into MGH main campus on Friday morning. I went to see the specialist, the specialist "prescribe" me a knee immobilizer. He said it will take approximately 6 weeks to heal. You can put weight on your feet. Come back and see me in 2-3 weeks.

My next appointment is this coming Tuesday. As of today, I have taken off my knee immobilizer and have been able to bend. Cleaning the house is hard, but I manage.

What I have learned:
  • Hubby thinks going to the supermarket and running around buying household stuff is an "excursion".
  • Hubby will still not clean the house. Luckily before the fall, I had wiped the whole house.
  • Microwavable food / ready made frozen food is your best friend. Trader Joe's, Lean Cuisine and Stouffer .
  • Girl friends are a life saver. They call you, and they check on you to see if you need anything.
  • At our town, we do not have trash pickup. The trash and recycling have been piling up for a month. Hubby does not like doing it. Again, things that I normally do, he will need to do, and I just close my trap. If he does it wrong, I won't say a word.
  • A fractured patella but non-displaced is a "great" break.
  • Hand quilting has been a life saver.
  • Playing games online is great too.
  • My ottoman is currently my best friend.
  • It's ok to eat junk food. Have your friends make you comfort food. It's one of the best medicine.
  • It's ok to cry and feel sorry for yourself.
