Quilt Show :: Original Sewing + Quilt Expo 2016

Another quilt show that I went to was the "Original Sewing + Quilt Expo 2016" in Worcester, MA which was held on April 7 - 9, 2016.

There were so many spectacular quilts.

"Beginnings" by Jennifer Day, Sante Fe, NM
"This young girl is holding a silver spoon. Even though SAQA is celebrating its 25th anniversary, it was born with a silver spoon and is still in its infancy. The joy the child is experiencing playing with her threads is what fiber artists feel every day as we play with our own fabrics and threads."

"A Walk in the Park" by Pennee Clanton, Buffalo, SD
"My sister Kellee Mitchell is an artist. When I got the idea to do this quilt I knew I was going to need her help to do the shadowing. When she came home for the holidays we worked on it together. The quilting speaks for itself!"

"Harvesting Sunshine" by Mary Alice Hart, Monroe, WI
" 'Leaves' make me think of the huge maple outside our north-facing bedroom. In autumn it bathes the room in reflected sunlight. Raking those leaves is like 'harvesting sunshine.' I tried to capture that feeling in this raw edge machine applique and quilted piece. The design carries on right through the piping."

"Night Flight No. 1" by Heidi A Parkes, Milwaukee, WI
"This quilt depicts the earth as seen from above at night in an airplane. It's improvisationally pieced using variations of the Seminole patchwork technique, which is a reminder of the affects of technology and world travel/migration. The series is named for the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, and is inspired by my love of flight. Concurrently, flight is an experience that induces fear and anxiety for many, and therefore creating this imagery on a quilt is an attempt to reintroduce comfort. The horizontal hand quilting represents latitude lines, and hints at the many invisible lines humans draw on the earth.

"In my 'Release the GEese' series, I've been exploring one classic quilt form: Flying Geese. Release the Geese II combines form, direction, color and pattern. I love the movement created with the combination of curved and straight flying geese. The curved geese are paper pieced with patterns of my own design."

"House Plan" by Pam Rocco, Santa Cruz, CA
"After making a series of house quilts, I designed a quilt based on the floor plan of our condominium. My sketch was only 2-1/2" x 4", which didn't allow for precise measurement, but the quilt is a reasonably accurate representation of one floor of our house. The peak at the top of the quilt looks like the roof of a house, but it is actually a deck that comes to a point."

"Tesselation" by Nydia S Kehnle, Monroe, NY
"Tessellation 4 is my fourth version of this quilt. The paper pieced pattern was designed by myself and Alison Glass. In this version I was inspired to use Vanessa Christenson's beautiful ombre' line of fabric. I used only 19 fabrics and challenged myself to create a dynamic composition with a focus on value and color. Gina Pina added another dimension to my quilt with her beautiful crosshatch quilting.

"Pine Burr Quilt" Tara Faughnan, Oakland, CA
"I have long been enamored with Pine Burr quilts (it's the official quilt of Alabama), and this is my second attempt at making one. This is such a heavy quilt, that I had to make it in pieces and attach them to a backing fabric as I went, not being able to plan or foresee the pattern beforehand, but designing it row by row. Each row is quilted down and the next row added on top, hiding the quilting on the front. Made from cottons and poly blends."

Jaw dropping aren't they?

Quilt & Bitch
